Septic Tank Pumping

Septic system maintenance and septic tank pumping is not rocket science, but it is important to keep up on proper maintenance, so you do not end up with a backup at the most inconvenient time. There are important things to know about care of your septic system.

How Septic Systems Work

When cities and areas that do not have the infrastructure for sewage and there is no centralized sewer system, an underground waste water treatment is critical for you to live in your house or on the property. Septic systems have 2 main elements, the septic tank to catch all the solids and a leach field or drain field in the soil for absorption of the leach field effluent.

When you have a septic system, all water from your home runs out via one drainpipe into your septic tank. The solid waste sinks to the bottom of the tank and becomes a sludge like material at the bottom of the tank, as the lighter waste floats to the top and the liquid flows into secondary compartment where it flows out through the effluent filter outlet to the drain field. When the soil and water combine the soil acts like a filter to remove the bacteria from the water and absorb back into the earth.

Because your septic tank is storing the waste that it separates, that waste needs to be pumped out periodically. A good rule of thumb is to have your septic tank pumped every three to five years, but you should have it inspected once a year to keep it in good working order.
